Speaking at the party's National Executive Council meeting in Abuja on April 9, 2025, Obi highlighted the escalating poverty and hardship affecting Nigerians. He urged opposition parties to unite and address these pressing issues, emphasizing the need for collective action starting within the Labour Party.

Obi remarked, "We must speak when things are wrong, Nigeria is collapsing, the numbers are clear, the indices are clear, more and more people are poorer." He illustrated the severity of the situation by sharing personal observations of increased begging, even in places where he was previously offered food and drink.

This call to action aligns with Obi's previous statements expressing concern over the state of democracy in Nigeria. At a recent event in Abuja, he lamented that the democratic structures established since 1999 have been undermined, leading to a collapse that necessitates rebuilding.

In response, the Presidency has refuted Obi's claims, asserting that democracy remains intact and cautioning him to be mindful of his statements.
