Senate President Godswill Akpabio has accused Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan of distorting facts and misrepresenting the Nigerian Senate on international platforms. This accusation follows Akpoti-Uduaghan's recent suspension from the Senate for six months due to alleged violations of Senate rules. In response to her suspension, Akpoti-Uduaghan presented her case at the Women in Parliament session during the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) meeting at the United Nations in New York, alleging victimization, sexual harassment, and abuse of office by Akpabio.
During a Senate plenary session on Thursday, Akpabio criticized Akpoti-Uduaghan for attempting to embarrass the upper chamber by presenting a misleading narrative to the international community. He expressed appreciation for federal lawmaker Kafilat Ogbara, who clarified to international media that Akpoti-Uduaghan's version of events was inconsistent with the actual proceedings in the Senate.
Akpabio stated, "I am aware that she distorted the facts and globalized the matter, embarrassing the Senate by giving a different narrative. I appreciate Hon Kafilat for clarifying to the international media that what was presented was completely different from the reality."
He further noted that Akpoti-Uduaghan had initially brought her allegations before the Senate through a petition but did not allow the Senate to examine it. Instead, she took the matter to court and later to the international community, actions that Akpabio suggested could discourage politicians from appointing women to key positions.
The Senate maintains that Akpoti-Uduaghan's suspension was due to gross misconduct and unruly behavior, not as a result of her allegations against Akpabio. In a statement, the Senate emphasized that her suspension was a decision of the Committee of the Whole Senate, following a report by the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Ethics and Privileges, which found her guilty of violating Sections 6.1 and 6.2 of the Senate Rules.
Akpabio urged senators to remain focused on their legislative responsibilities and avoid distractions that could derail the work of the Senate. He expressed gratitude for the vote of confidence from his colleagues, stating, "I thank you for this vote of confidence. Let us stay focused and avoid unnecessary distractions."
The situation has garnered significant attention, with various stakeholders and organizations expressing differing views on the matter. As events continue to unfold, the Nigerian Senate faces increased scrutiny both domestically and internationally.
