Funke Akindele Opens Up: “I Cried When Women Mocked Me for Not Having a Husband”

Nigerian actress and filmmaker Funke Akindele has opened up about the emotional toll of being mocked online for not having a husband. In a recent interview on the With Chude Live show, she recounted how a viral video of women dancing and mocking her marital status deeply affected her.

“There was a video on social media that some women mocked me for not having a husband,” she said. “My God. I see all the insults on social media. I see all the posts that show how I left one husband for another one. I cried, cried, and cried. I just told myself, you need to speak to someone about this. You can’t continue like this.”

Akindele revealed that the experience led her to seek therapy, which helped her cope with the depression stemming from the online mockery. She emphasized the importance of speaking up and seeking help, stating, “I told myself that I needed to speak, I reached out, and I started speaking. After then, I felt better. Things I couldn’t tell people out there. I spoke to my therapist and I was better.”

Turning adversity into creativity, Akindele channeled her experiences into her work, using the mockery as inspiration for her filmmaking. She encouraged others facing similar challenges to seek support and not internalize their pain. “So, I want to advise you out there. It’s very important for you to speak up. You need it. You can’t take everything. I’m a very strong person now. I have that strength to face any challenges in life,” she added.

Her candid revelations highlight the impact of cyberbullying and the importance of mental health awareness.
