Alaafin of Oyo Affirms Respect for Ooni of Ife Amid Throne Hierarchy Controversy

The Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Abimbola Owoade, has publicly expressed his respect for the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi, amid recent controversies surrounding his own appointment. This statement comes in the wake of significant backlash from nine royal families in Oyo, collectively known as the Atiba 9, who have challenged the legitimacy of his ascension to the throne.

The Atiba 9 argue that Oba Owoade's appointment bypassed traditional protocols, notably the Ipebi rites, which are considered essential in the coronation process. They have criticized Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde for allegedly disregarding established customs and have vowed to pursue legal action to uphold the sanctity of the Alaafin's stool.

Amid these tensions, the Ooni of Ife has endorsed Oba Owoade's appointment, urging him to collaborate with other stakeholders for the progress of Oyo town . Oba Owoade's acknowledgment of the Ooni's stature appears to be an effort to foster unity and reinforce the bonds between Yoruba traditional institutions.

The situation underscores the complexities involved in maintaining traditional practices within modern governance frameworks, highlighting the need for dialogue and adherence to cultural protocols to preserve the integrity of revered institutions.
