Amaju Pinnick Loses FIFA Council Re-election by a Single Vote

Former Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) President, Amaju Pinnick, has narrowly lost his bid for re-election to the FIFA Council. During the 14th Confederation of African Football (CAF) Extraordinary General Assembly held on Wednesday in Cairo, Egypt, Pinnick secured 28 votes, falling just one vote short of the 29 votes obtained by both Mauritania's Ahmed Yahya and Djibouti's Souleiman Waberi, who clinched the final available seats.

The election results for the six African representatives on the FIFA Council are as follows:

  • Fouzi Lekjaa (Morocco): 49 votes
  • Hany Abou Rida (Egypt): 35 votes
  • Djibrilla Hima Hamidou (Niger): 35 votes
  • Ahmed Yahya (Mauritania): 29 votes
  • Souleiman Waberi (Djibouti): 29 votes
  • Kanizat Ibrahim (Comoros): 30 votes (women's seat)

Pinnick's tenure on the FIFA Council began in 2021, following his leadership of the NFF from 2014 to 2022. His narrow loss signifies Nigeria's absence from the FIFA Council, marking a notable shift in the nation's influence within international football governance.

In related developments, Patrice Motsepe was re-elected unopposed as CAF President for a second term, and Kanizat Ibrahim from Comoros secured the women's seat on the FIFA Council with 30 votes.
