Aston Villa Thrash Newcastle 4-1 to Boost Champions League Hopes

Aston Villa delivered a commanding 4-1 victory over Newcastle United at Villa Park on April 19, 2025, significantly bolstering their aspirations for Champions League qualification. ​

 

Ollie Watkins opened the scoring just 33 seconds into the match, equalling Gabby Agbonlahor’s club record of 74 Premier League goals. Although Fabian Schär equalized for Newcastle in the 17th minute, Villa dominated the second half. Ian Maatsen restored the lead, followed by a Dan Burn own goal and a late strike from substitute Amadou Onana, sealing the win.

 

This victory propels Villa to sixth place in the Premier League with 57 points, just two points behind third-placed Newcastle. Manager Unai Emery's tactical decisions, including impactful substitutions like Jacob Ramsey and Onana, were instrumental in the team's success. ​
