Global Leaders and Faithful Gather to Honor Pope Francis

On April 26, 2025, Pope Francis was laid to rest in a solemn and inclusive funeral ceremony that drew an estimated 250,000 mourners to St. Peter’s Square in Vatican City. The funeral Mass, presided over by Cardinal Giovanni Battista Re, honored the pontiff's legacy of compassion, humility, and advocacy for the marginalized.

The ceremony was attended by over 50 world leaders, including U.S. President Donald Trump, French President Emmanuel Macron, and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. Royalty from various nations, such as Prince William representing the British royal family, also paid their respects.

In a departure from tradition, Pope Francis chose to be buried at the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore in Rome, rather than beneath St. Peter’s Basilica. His simple zinc-lined wooden coffin and the modest tomb bearing only the Latin word “Franciscus” reflect his commitment to humility and service.

The funeral marked the beginning of nine days of mourning, known as the "novemdiales," during which Masses will be celebrated in honor of the late pope.

Pope Francis's passing has been met with an outpouring of grief and remembrance, as the world reflects on his profound impact on the Catholic Church and his unwavering dedication to social justice.
