Lagos Unveils Africa’s First AI-Driven Feature Film, "Makemation"

Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has unveiled "Makemation," Africa's first feature film centered on artificial intelligence (AI). The film is scheduled to premiere in Nigerian cinemas on April 18, 2025, during the Easter weekend.

"Makemation" explores themes such as STEM education, digital skills, financial literacy, and gender equality. It highlights how young Africans leverage advanced technology to address some of the continent's most pressing challenges. The film boasts a star-studded cast, including Richard Mofe-Damijo, Tony Umez, Shaffy Bello, Ibrahim Chatta, Toyin Afolayan, and Ali Nuhu.

Governor Sanwo-Olu praised the production team for their innovative approach and reaffirmed the government's commitment to supporting the creative industry. He emphasized the importance of collaboration and assured creatives of his administration's willingness to partner on transformative ideas that project and develop the state's creative sector.

Producer Toyosi Akerele-Ogunsiji noted that "Makemation" examines the intersection of real life and AI, showcasing AI's transformative power and its impact on the fourth industrial revolution. She emphasized the need for Nigerians to move beyond consuming innovation to building their own, with the film serving as a catalyst for such a shift.

The Lagos State government has been actively investing in infrastructure to enable the creative sector to thrive. Through strategic partnerships, nearly 20,000 young Nigerians have been trained in filmmaking, content creation, and other creative fields. Institutions such as EbonyLife Academy, Gidi Creatives, AMA Creative Academy, and Delyork Academy have collaborated on these initiatives.

"Makemation" is set to make its cinematic debut in Lagos on April 18, 2025, before rolling out globally in May. The film is expected to redefine Africa's future through art and technology, offering audiences an immersive cinematic experience that blends pop culture, research, and AI into a high-tension, inspiring, and comedic masterpiece.
