Putin Declares Unilateral 'Easter Truce' in Ukraine Amid Ongoing Hostilities

On April 19, 2025, Russian President Vladimir Putin declared a unilateral "Easter truce" in the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. The ceasefire is scheduled to commence at 6:00 PM local time on Saturday and continue until midnight on Monday, April 21. According to a Kremlin statement, this pause in military action is driven by humanitarian considerations.

Despite the announcement, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy reported continued drone attacks and reaffirmed Ukraine's positions in the Kursk and Belgorod regions. Russia claimed to have recaptured 99.5% of territory seized by Ukraine in the Kursk incursion and reported ongoing military operations in the Donetsk region.

The situation remains fluid, with both sides accusing each other of violations. Observers note that similar ceasefires in the past, such as Putin's 2023 36-hour Orthodox Christmas truce, were viewed skeptically by Ukraine as strategic maneuvers.
