Niger, a significant oil producer in West Africa, is currently experiencing a severe fuel shortage that began at the start of March 2025. This crisis has led to long queues at petrol stations, with many motorists in the capital city, Niamey, unable to refuel their vehicles.
The shortage is particularly concerning given Niger's status as an oil-producing nation. The country has been grappling with an unprecedented scarcity of petrol, the most widely used fuel, disrupting daily life and economic activities.
In addition to the fuel crisis, Niger's mining sector has faced challenges. In December 2024, French nuclear fuels company Orano reported losing control of its Somair uranium mine in Niger. Nigerien authorities took control of the mine, and board decisions were no longer being followed, leading to a suspension of production after exports were halted. Niger contributes about 4% of the global uranium supply, and this development has added to the uncertainty for international businesses operating in the country.
These concurrent issues in the oil and mining sectors highlight the broader economic and operational challenges Niger is currently facing.
