On Tuesday evening, April 15, 2025, suspected armed herdsmen launched a deadly assault on Otobi, a community in Akpa District of Otukpo Local Government Area, Benue State. The attack, which began around 5:30 p.m., resulted in several fatalities and the destruction of numerous homes, forcing residents to flee for safety
Eyewitnesses reported that the assailants stormed the village, shooting indiscriminately and setting houses ablaze. A local resident, Edwin Emma, described the chaos, stating that many people were feared dead and that his family was among those fleeing the violence
This incident marks the second attack on Otobi within ten days. Previously, a security guard at the Federal Ministry of Water Resources Multipurpose Dam in the area was killed, highlighting the escalating insecurity in the region.
The lawmaker representing Otukpo-Akpa Constituency in the Benue State House of Assembly, Kennedy Angbo, confirmed the attack and expressed concern over the increasing frequency of such incidents. He emphasized the urgent need for enhanced security measures to protect the lives and properties of residents.
The Benue State Police Command has reportedly deployed officers to the affected areas, and operations are ongoing to restore peace and apprehend the perpetrators .
This latest attack adds to a series of violent incidents in Benue State, where communities have been repeatedly targeted by suspected herdsmen, leading to loss of lives and displacement of residents.
