Earlier today, a tense situation unfolded at the Rivers State House of Assembly Complex when Governor Siminalayi Fubara arrived to present the 2025 budget but was denied entry as the gates were locked. Security personnel at the complex stated that the governor's visit lacked official communication with the Assembly.
Governor Fubara, however, claimed he had informed Speaker Martins Amaewhule of his intended visit through a letter and attempted phone calls since Tuesday.
This incident occurs amidst a backdrop of political tension in the state. The Assembly had previously issued a 48-hour ultimatum for the governor to present the budget, following a Supreme Court judgment recognizing the 27-member faction loyal to Nyesom Wike, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, as the legitimate members of the Rivers House of Assembly.
Governor Fubara had earlier indicated he was awaiting the Certified True Copy of the court judgment before proceeding with the budget presentation.
The situation underscores the ongoing political complexities in Rivers State, reflecting the challenges in the relationship between the executive and legislative branches.
