Terror on the Highway: Gunmen Abduct 15 Travellers in Benue State

On Thursday, April 24, 2025, gunmen abducted at least 15 travelers along the Adoka-Naka Road in Gwer West Local Government Area of Benue State, Nigeria. The assailants ambushed two commercial vehicles—a Picnic bus and a Sharon bus—each carrying passengers traveling between Makurdi and Ankpa in Kogi State. The first vehicle, en route from Makurdi to Lokoja, had nine passengers; six were abducted. The second vehicle, traveling from Ankpa to Makurdi, had eight passengers, all of whom were kidnapped. The incident occurred just three kilometers from Naka town.

Yakubu Onu, Secretary of the Nigeria Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) High-Level Unit, confirmed the incident and expressed concern over the safety of transporters on that route. The driver and three passengers from the first vehicle who were not abducted reported the incident to the police in Naka but have not been heard from since. Similarly, there has been no further information from the second vehicle's passengers.

Traditional ruler His Royal Highness Daniel Abomtse, the Ter Tyorshin of Gwer West, also confirmed the abductions and noted that the police had released the passengers who were not taken.

As of now, the Benue State Police Command has not provided additional details regarding the incident. This event underscores the ongoing security challenges in Benue State, where similar attacks have been reported in recent weeks.

Authorities are urged to intensify efforts to secure the release of the abducted individuals and to enhance security measures along vulnerable routes to prevent future occurrences.
