Tragedy at YABATECH: Student Shot Dead in Suspected Cult Attack Near Campus

A student of Yaba College of Technology (YABATECH) in Lagos was tragically shot dead on Tuesday, April 22, 2025, in a suspected cult-related attack near the campus's back gate. The victim, whose identity has not been officially disclosed, was reportedly approached by a group of young men who shot him twice at close range shortly after he had completed his examinations for the day. The assailants fled the scene immediately, leaving the student in a pool of blood.

The Lagos State Police Command has confirmed the incident and announced the arrest of seven suspects in connection with the attack. Police spokesperson CSP Benjamin Hundeyin stated that the shooting was linked to a cult rivalry and that investigations are ongoing. He added that four rounds of live ammunition and some charms were recovered from the deceased's pocket at the scene.

This incident is part of a disturbing trend of cult-related violence in Lagos. Just a day earlier, a 16-year-old boy was killed by a stray bullet during a suspected cult clash in the Oyingbo area of Ebute Metta. In another related incident, residents of Idimu discovered the bodies of two men, one of whom had been beheaded, following a cult attack that took place late Saturday night.

The recent killing at YABATECH has sparked renewed concerns over student safety and the prevalence of cult activities on campuses. Authorities are urged to intensify efforts to curb cultism and ensure the safety of students.
