UEFA Sanctions Barcelona for Fan Misconduct in Champions League

Benfica is under scrutiny from UEFA following fan disturbances during their recent UEFA Champions League match against FC Barcelona in Barcelona. The incidents involved the setting off of flares and the throwing of objects by Benfica supporters, actions that violate UEFA's regulations on crowd behavior.

This is not the first time Benfica has faced potential sanctions for fan misconduct. In March 2024, UEFA imposed a suspended ban on the sale of tickets to Benfica fans for one away match, along with a €28,000 fine, due to similar disturbances during a Europa League match against Toulouse. The suspended sanction was set for a probationary period of two years, meaning any further infractions could activate the ban.

In light of the recent events in Barcelona, UEFA is considering enforcing the suspended sanction, which would prohibit Benfica supporters from attending the next European away match. The club has previously urged its fans to adhere to regulations to avoid such penalties, emphasizing that misconduct damages the club's image and deprives the team of crucial support.

UEFA's disciplinary bodies are expected to review the incidents thoroughly before making a final decision on the sanctions to be imposed on Benfica.
