Wike Asserts Impeachment of Governor Fubara Would Have No Consequences

Former Rivers State Governor and current Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has stated that "heaven will not fall" if the Rivers State House of Assembly impeaches Governor Siminalayi Fubara. During a media briefing in Abuja on Wednesday, Wike emphasized that impeachment is a constitutional process and should proceed if the governor has committed impeachable offenses, including the alleged withholding of lawmakers' salaries for months.

Wike criticized Governor Fubara's approach to mending relations with the Assembly, particularly a letter from the Secretary to the State Government seeking a meeting to discuss the Supreme Court's recent verdict on the state's political situation. He described the letter as "useless," suggesting that Fubara should have personally reached out to the Assembly leadership to resolve issues.

The Supreme Court recently dismissed Fubara's appeal challenging the legitimacy of the House of Assembly under Speaker Martins Amaewhule, ordering the Assembly to resume its functions immediately. The court also invalidated the local government elections conducted on October 5, 2024, and barred federal financial institutions from releasing funds to the Rivers State Government until it complies with court orders.

In response to the impeachment threat, Governor Fubara has vowed to continue his tenure, while the People's Democratic Party (PDP) has cautioned Wike's allies against actions that could destabilize the state.

These developments highlight the escalating political tension in Rivers State, with potential implications for its governance and stability.
