On March 3, 2025, the Edo State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal reserved judgment in the petition filed by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and its candidate, Asue Ighodalo, challenging the outcome of the September 21, 2024, governorship election.
The tribunal, led by Justice Wilfred Kpochi, concluded proceedings after counsel from all parties adopted their final written addresses. A date for the judgment will be communicated to the parties by the tribunal's secretary.
During the session, counsel for the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Kanu Agabi (SAN), argued that the petition lacked merit and should be dismissed. He contended that the tribunal could not annul the election since such relief was not sought by the petitioners. Agabi also noted that the petitioners' claims of non-compliance were weak, as they were not accompanied by a request for election nullification.
Asue Ighodalo, a Nigerian lawyer and politician, was the PDP's candidate in the 2024 Edo State governorship election. He is a founding partner of the law firm Banwo & Ighodalo and has held positions such as chairman of Sterling Bank Plc and the Nigerian Economic Summit Group. Ighodalo secured the PDP's candidacy for the 2024 election but lost to the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, Monday Okpebholo, who received 291,667 votes to Ighodalo's 247,274.
Following the election, Ighodalo and the PDP filed a petition alleging non-compliance with the Electoral Act, leading to the current tribunal proceedings.
The tribunal's forthcoming judgment will determine the validity of the election results and address the allegations presented by the PDP and Ighodalo.
