FEC Approves ₦10.3bn for HIV Drugs, Diabetes Kits, and Medical Equipment to Boost Healthcare in Nigeria

The Federal Executive Council (FEC) has approved ₦10.299 billion for the procurement of essential medical supplies and equipment to enhance healthcare accessibility and affordability in Nigeria.

The approved funds will be allocated as follows:

  • ₦997 million for third-line antiretroviral drugs to support HIV/AIDS patients who have developed resistance to first- and second-line treatments.

  • ₦2 billion for locally manufactured diabetes diagnostic kits. This initiative supports a Lagos-based company, one of the first in Africa to produce such kits locally, aiming to improve early detection and management of diabetes nationwide.

  • ₦4.5 billion for essential medications, including antibiotics, antihypertensives, and antidiabetic drugs. These medicines will be sourced from local manufacturers to enhance affordability and availability across the country.

  • ₦2.1 billion for the procurement of a mobile X-ray machine and the rehabilitation of a 64-slice computerized tomography (CT) scanner at Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital in Bauchi. This investment aims to improve diagnostic services and clinical care in the region.

These approvals align with President Bola Tinubu's vision to transform Nigeria's healthcare sector by increasing domestic financing, supporting local production, and improving healthcare infrastructure.
