First Lady Senator Oluremi Tinubu has officially commissioned a state-of-the-art Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Centre in Ibadan, Oyo State, as part of the Renewed Hope Initiative (RHI) aimed at enhancing digital literacy across Nigeria.
Located at the Oladipo Alayande School of Science in Oke-Bola, the centre was established in collaboration with the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) and handed over to the Oyo State Government as a social investment intervention.
Named in honor of Chief (Mrs.) Onikepo Akande, former Minister of Trade and a prominent advocate for women's empowerment, the facility is the third of four ICT hubs being developed nationwide under the RHI.
Senator Tinubu emphasized the initiative's focus on empowering individuals, especially women and girls, by providing them with digital skills to access global opportunities. She stated, "This is about empowering individuals, especially women and girls, to access opportunities on a global scale."
Governor Seyi Makinde expressed gratitude to the Federal Government for the centre, highlighting the importance of digital skills in shaping Nigeria’s future, particularly in areas like Information Technology and Artificial Intelligence.
Minister of Communication, Innovation and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani, reiterated the government's commitment to building a solid foundation for Nigeria’s future through physical, human, and digital infrastructures. He encouraged the youth to take full advantage of the ICT hub to ensure Nigeria's continued progress in digital transformation.
Chief Onikepo Akande expressed appreciation for the honor, noting that the ICT centre symbolizes Ibadan’s transformation from an ancient city to a thriving digital hub.
The commissioning marks a significant step in Nigeria’s pursuit of digital inclusion and socio-economic development, reflecting the administration's commitment to bridging the digital divide and fostering economic growth through technology.
