Belgian goalkeeper Koen Casteels has announced his retirement from international football, citing disagreements over the anticipated return of Thibaut Courtois to the national team. Casteels, who became Belgium's first-choice goalkeeper during Courtois' absence, expressed his dissatisfaction with the Belgian Football Federation's decision to welcome Courtois back, stating that it contradicts the team's principles.
Courtois had stepped away from international duty in June 2023 following a dispute with then-coach Domenico Tedesco. With Rudi García's appointment as the new head coach, Courtois has indicated his readiness to return, a move that has caused unease among some players, including Casteels.
Casteels, currently playing for Al Qadsiah in Saudi Arabia, earned 20 caps for Belgium since his debut in 2020 and was the starting goalkeeper during Euro 2024.
The Belgian Football Federation acknowledged Casteels' decision, with sporting director Vincent Mannaert expressing surprise but respecting his choice. Mannaert noted that Casteels wishes to focus on his club career in Saudi Arabia and extended best wishes for his future endeavors.
