A man from Katsina State has initiated divorce proceedings against his wife of 14 years because she allowed a male doctor to attend to her during the childbirth of their baby. According to Dr. Fatima Adamu, the Executive Director of Nana Women and Girls Initiative, the teenage mother had a complicated childbirth and was taken to the hospital, where no female medical practitioner was available. As a result, a male medical practitioner attended to her and successfully delivered the baby. When the husband found out about this, he became angry and decided to divorce her.
Dr. Adamu appealed to the government, especially state governments, to ensure equitable distribution of medical personnel in rural areas. She also highlighted the shortage of healthcare workers in Nigeria, stating that the production of medical professionals falls short of the country's needs.
