The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) has directed MultiChoice Nigeria to suspend its planned subscription price increase for DStv and GOtv services, pending the conclusion of an ongoing investigation. This directive comes after MultiChoice announced on February 24, 2025, that it would raise prices effective March 1, 2025, with the DStv Premium package increasing from N37,000 to N44,500, and the Compact+ package from N25,000 to N30,000.
In response to public outcry and concerns over potential anti-competitive practices, the FCCPC summoned MultiChoice's CEO for an investigative hearing initially scheduled for February 27, 2025. Upon MultiChoice's request for an extension, the hearing was rescheduled to March 6, 2025. The FCCPC has mandated that MultiChoice maintain its current subscription rates as of February 27, 2025, until the investigation is complete.
This is not the first time MultiChoice has faced regulatory action over subscription price hikes. In June 2024, the Competition and Consumer Protection Tribunal fined MultiChoice Nigeria N150 million and ordered the company to provide a one-month free subscription to its DStv and GOtv customers for disobeying a previous order restraining it from increasing prices.
The FCCPC's current intervention aims to prevent potential consumer harm and ensure fair market practices in Nigeria's pay-TV industry.
