The Oyo State Government has refuted recent reports alleging the death of the Olubadan of Ibadan, Oba Owolabi Olakulehin, affirming that the monarch is alive and in good health. On Monday evening, rumors circulated claiming that the 89-year-old traditional ruler had passed away. However, state officials and palace representatives have dismissed these claims as unfounded.
Dr. Wasiu Olatunbosun, the Oyo State Commissioner for Culture and Tourism, addressed the rumors, stating, "Yes, Olubadan is alive, hale, and hearty. I spoke with one of his sons, Prince Olaseke Owolabi Olakulehin, who represented the family at the coronation committee."
Similarly, Gbenga Ayoade, the Chief Press Secretary to the Olubadan, assured the public of the monarch's well-being. He noted that upon leaving the palace around 8 p.m., there were no indications of any health issues. Later communications with the palace confirmed that Oba Olakulehin remains in good health. Ayoade also dispelled rumors suggesting that the Olubadan had been flown out of Ibadan for medical treatment, emphasizing that the monarch is still in the city and "doing very fine."
Oba Owolabi Olakulehin, who received his staff of office from Governor Seyi Makinde on July 12, 2024, is preparing to celebrate his 90th birthday on July 5, 2025.
The Oyo State Government urges the public to disregard these unfounded rumors and rely on official channels for accurate information regarding the health of the Olubadan.
