Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan of Kogi Central has publicly accused Senate President Godswill Akpabio of sexual harassment. In an interview with Arise Television on February 28, 2025, she detailed incidents from December 2023, alleging that Akpabio made inappropriate advances during a visit to his residence in Akwa Ibom State, even in the presence of her husband. She also claimed that her legislative efforts, particularly regarding the Ajaokuta Steel Company, were obstructed after she rejected his advances.
In response, Akpabio has denied these allegations, asserting that they are baseless and politically motivated. He emphasized his commitment to maintaining professionalism and integrity in his role as Senate President.
This controversy follows a recent altercation between the two senators over seating arrangements in the Senate chamber, during which Akpoti-Uduaghan was referred to the Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges, and Public Petitions for disciplinary review.
It's noteworthy that similar allegations have been made against Akpabio in the past. In 2020, Joy Nunieh, former acting managing director of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), claimed she slapped Akpabio for allegedly sexually harassing her, an accusation he also denied.
The Senate has yet to announce any formal investigation into the current allegations. Observers and advocacy groups are calling for a thorough and impartial inquiry to uphold the integrity of the legislative body.
