UNICEF Urgently Seeks $3.3 Million to Combat Diphtheria Outbreak in Nigeria

UNICEF Nigeria has issued an urgent appeal for an additional $3.3 million by year-end to address the growing diphtheria outbreak in Nigeria, which has already seen over 11,500 suspected cases, 7,000 confirmed cases, and 453 fatalities, mainly among children. UNICEF reports that most affected cases involve children aged 4 to 15 who haven't received any vaccinations, highlighting the critical need for vaccination in the country. The organization is actively assisting the Nigerian government in managing the outbreak, including the procurement and distribution of diphtheria vaccines to affected states. Nigeria has a concerning 2.2 million unvaccinated children, ranking second globally, and UNICEF emphasizes the importance of immediate action to protect every child from preventable diseases through vaccines. UNICEF calls on partners, stakeholders, and the global community to unite in ensuring all Nigerian children receive life-saving vaccines. Furthermore, the organization emphasizes the need to strengthen routine immunization, community engagement, and healthcare systems to prevent similar outbreaks in the future.
