Adetunji "Teejay" Opayele, the 32-year-old co-founder and Chief Technical Officer of the Nigerian retail automation startup Bumpa, tragically lost his life following a motorcycle accident on March 4, 2025. While returning from the gym along Ozumba Mbadiwe Road in Victoria Island, Lagos, Opayele's motorcycle was struck by a vehicle driven by Biola Adams-Odutayo, who allegedly failed to yield the right of way while merging onto the expressway.
Eyewitnesses reported that despite Opayele lying unconscious but still breathing on the road, Adams-Odutayo, a healthcare professional, refused to assist, purportedly expressing concern about blood staining her car. Bystanders eventually transported Opayele to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead after midnight.
The Lagos State Police Command conducted a thorough investigation into the incident. Adams-Odutayo was arraigned in Court 1, Tinubu, on March 12, 2025, on charges of reckless and careless driving leading to Opayele's death. The court granted her bail and adjourned the case until April 16, 2025.
The circumstances surrounding Opayele's death have sparked public outrage and calls for justice. A petition on Change.org has garnered significant support, demanding that Adams-Odutayo be charged with manslaughter rather than reckless driving. Amnesty International Nigeria has also weighed in, highlighting the need for accountability in the case.
The Lagos State Police Command has assured the public of its commitment to transparency and justice as the case proceeds.
