Calabar Police Inspector Allegedly Goes Berserk, Resulting in Civilian Casualty and Injuries

In the early hours of Sunday, March 23, 2025, a tragic incident unfolded at the Atakpa Divisional Police Headquarters in Calabar, Cross River State, where Police Inspector Effiong Bassey allegedly went berserk, resulting in the shooting of three individuals.

According to reports, Inspector Bassey had just returned from night duty at a microfinance bank in Calabar South when he refused to surrender his AK-47 rifle, instead cocking the weapon and threatening to shoot his colleagues. He subsequently opened fire on bystanders who had been instructed to leave the area, tragically striking three individuals.

The victims included Ijeoma Wilson Obot, a 41-year-old female, who later succumbed to her injuries. The other two victims, Charles Mkpang and another individual, are currently receiving medical treatment and are in stable condition.

The officer was eventually subdued, disarmed, and is now in police custody, with further investigations underway. The Cross River State Police Command has expressed deep regret over the incident and assured the public of a thorough investigation.

The Assistant Inspector General of Police, Zone 6 Headquarters, Calabar, along with the Cross River State Command Management Team, visited the hospital where the victims are receiving care and made a donation to support their immediate treatment.

This incident has raised concerns about the mental health and well-being of law enforcement officers, highlighting the need for regular psychological evaluations and support systems within the police force to prevent such tragic occurrences in the future.
