The Edo State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal, sitting in Abuja, has dismissed the petition filed by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and its candidate, Asue Ighodalo, challenging the election of Governor Monday Okpebholo of the All Progressives Congress (APC). The tribunal upheld Governor Okpebholo's victory in the 21 September 2024 governorship election, stating that the petitioners failed to substantiate their allegations of over-voting and non-compliance with electoral laws.
The three-member panel, led by Justice Wilfred Kpochi, emphasized that the PDP and Ighodalo did not provide sufficient evidence to support their claims of electoral malpractice. The tribunal noted that the petitioners merely presented documents without competent witnesses to validate their allegations.
In response to the tribunal's decision, Governor Okpebholo extended an olive branch to his opponents, urging them to join hands in fostering the development of Edo State. He expressed gratitude to the tribunal for its diligence and fairness and reiterated his commitment to good governance, transparency, and inclusive development.
Meanwhile, Asue Ighodalo has indicated his intention to appeal the tribunal's ruling at the Court of Appeal.
