Court Remands Hip-Hop Artist Terry Apala Over Alleged Naira Abuse

Nigerian hip-hop artist Terry Apala (real name: Terry Alexander Ejeh) has been remanded in Ikoyi Correctional Centre following his arraignment by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on a charge of naira abuse. The charge stems from an incident on January 5, 2025, at Madison Place, Oniru, Lagos Island, where Apala was allegedly seen dancing on naira notes during a social event. This act is considered a violation under Section 21(1) of the Central Bank of Nigeria Act 2007, which prohibits the abuse or mutilation of the national currency.

In court, Apala pleaded not guilty to the charge. His legal counsel, Felix Nwakbudu, informed Justice Akintayo Aluko of a pending bail application. However, the prosecution, represented by Sulaimon Sulaiman, opposed the hearing of the bail application, stating that they had only received it a few hours before the court session and needed more time to review it. Consequently, Justice Aluko ordered Apala's remand in custody until the bail application is heard and determined. The case has been adjourned to May 5, 2025, for trial.

This development has garnered significant attention, highlighting the legal implications of actions perceived as disrespectful to national symbols. The outcome of the trial may set a precedent for similar cases in the future.
