BREAKING: Tinubu authorizes the relocation of 29 prisons

As of February 21, 2025, there have been no recent announcements regarding President Bola Tinubu approving the relocation of 29 prisons. However, in mid-2024, the Federal Government, through the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, unveiled plans to relocate 29 correctional centers from urban areas. This initiative aims to address security concerns arising from the proximity of these facilities to densely populated regions. Notable prisons identified for relocation include those in Ikoyi, Apapa, Agodi, Enugu, and Suleja. The decision was influenced by an audit of the country's 256 correctional centers, highlighting the risks posed by their urban locations.

Minister Tunji-Ojo emphasized the urgency of this move, particularly citing the Ikoyi Correctional Centre's location, which shares boundaries with commercial and residential buildings. He noted that such proximity not only poses security threats but also contravenes international standards requiring a buffer zone of at least 100 meters around correctional facilities.

While these plans were articulated in 2024, there have been no subsequent updates or official approvals from President Tinubu regarding the relocation of these 29 prisons.
