As of October 29, 2024, South African authorities have completed an investigation into Anabela Rungo, the mother of former Miss South Africa finalist Chidimma Adetshina, uncovering potential fraud and identity theft. The Department of Home Affairs has forwarded the case to the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (Hawks) and is poised to revoke the identities and travel documents of both Rungo and Adetshina. Officials have been unable to trace the passport Rungo used for her travels, including a recent trip to Nigeria to support her daughter at the Miss Universe Nigeria pageant.
The investigation began in August 2024 when the Department of Home Affairs received a request from the Miss South Africa organizers to verify Adetshina's citizenship. Preliminary findings suggested that Rungo may have committed fraud and identity theft, potentially stealing the identity of a South African woman, which prevented the rightful individual from registering her own child. Adetshina, an infant at the time of the alleged fraud in 2001, is not implicated in her mother's actions.
Amid the controversy and xenophobic backlash due to her Nigerian heritage, Adetshina withdrew from the Miss South Africa competition and subsequently won the Miss Universe Nigeria title. She went on to achieve first runner-up at the Miss Universe pageant held in Mexico City.
The case highlights ongoing issues of xenophobia in South Africa, where immigrants and individuals of foreign descent often face discrimination and are blamed for socio-economic challenges.
