The Federal Government of Nigeria has announced the release of ₦50 billion to settle earned allowances owed to academic and non-academic staff of federal universities. This development was disclosed by the Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Alausa, on Wednesday, April 23, 2025, during a press briefing in Abuja.
According to the Minister, the disbursement is part of President Bola Tinubu's commitment to enhancing the welfare of university staff and ensuring stability in the nation's higher education sector. The funds aim to address longstanding issues related to earned academic allowances, which have been a recurring point of contention between the government and university unions.
However, the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has expressed skepticism regarding the announcement. In an interview with SaharaReporters, ASUU National President, Professor Emmanuel Osodeke, stated that the union has not received any verifiable evidence of such payment. He emphasized that until concrete proof is provided, the union remains cautious about the government's claims.
This development comes amid ongoing discussions between the government and university unions to resolve disputes over staff remuneration and working conditions. The release of the ₦50 billion is seen as a significant step towards fulfilling agreements and preventing further disruptions in the academic calendar.
Stakeholders in the education sector are closely monitoring the situation, hoping that the funds will be disbursed promptly and transparently to the intended beneficiaries.
