Lagosians Protest Exorbitant House Rents and Agent Charges

On April 26, 2025, residents of Lagos took to the streets to protest against the escalating costs of housing and the high fees imposed by real estate agents. A video circulating on social media shows protesters in a car displaying a banner that reads, "Enough is enough, we say no to overpriced house rents. We say no to housing agents. Agents of darkness."

The protest highlights growing frustration among Lagosians over the financial burden of securing rental accommodations. Many tenants have expressed concerns about arbitrary rent hikes and additional charges such as caution fees and inspection fees, which are often demanded by agents.

In response to these issues, the Lagos State Government has taken steps to regulate the real estate sector. Officials have declared certain fees illegal and are advocating for rent reductions to alleviate the pressure on residents. The government is also engaging with stakeholders to ensure compliance with real estate transaction regulations.
