Lyon's Fonseca Banned for Nine Months Following Referee Altercation

Lyon's head coach, Paulo Fonseca, has been handed a nine-month ban by the Ligue de Football Professionnel (LFP) following a heated confrontation with referee Benoît Millot during Lyon's 2-1 victory over Brest. This suspension, effective until November 30, 2025, prohibits Fonseca from accessing the dugout, officials' dressing rooms, and participating in any official match functions.

The incident occurred during stoppage time when Fonseca reacted angrily to a reviewed penalty decision, leading to his dismissal for exhibiting an "intimidating attitude" and allegedly attempting to head-butt the referee. Lyon players had to intervene to de-escalate the situation.

Lyon has criticized the severity of the sanction, attributing it to the current negative climate surrounding French refereeing, and is exploring all appeal options. Fonseca, who apologized for his behavior, had only recently taken charge of Lyon, making this incident a significant early setback in his tenure.
