On February 12, 2025, the Oyo State Government inaugurated a Steering Committee and a Technical Working Committee dedicated to addressing gender-based violence (GBV) in the state. The inauguration coincided with the International Day of Zero Tolerance for Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) and was held at the Local Government Service Commission Staff Training Centre in Ibadan.
Governor Seyi Makinde, represented by the Head of Service, Olubunmi Oni, emphasized the committees' mandate to develop and implement programs and policies aimed at preventing GBV in Oyo State. He highlighted the pervasive nature of GBV, noting that it transcends borders, cultures, and socioeconomic statuses, thereby negatively impacting countless individuals globally.
The Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Inclusion, Toyin Balogun, underscored the importance of these committees working collaboratively with the ministry to eradicate GBV and FGM. She stated that the committees are expected to develop a strategic, comprehensive, and results-driven roadmap for implementing the Oyo State Action Plan for the Eradication of FGM between 2025 and 2030.
In support of these initiatives, the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) commended the Oyo State government for establishing the technical working group on GBV. UNFPA representative Tolulope Babawarun highlighted achievements from 2024, including training for law enforcement and judiciary members on the Violence Against Persons Prohibition (VAPP) law, and providing quality prevention and care services to over 500,000 women and girls through 350 healthcare workers across 144 health facilities in the state.
The formation of these committees signifies Oyo State's commitment to fostering a safer and more inclusive environment by addressing and preventing gender-based violence through comprehensive and collaborative efforts.
