Betty Akeredolu shares how she overcame breast cancer 27 years ago.

Betty Anyanwu-Akeredolu, the former First Lady of Ondo State, Nigeria, was diagnosed with breast cancer at the age of 44. Her educational background helped her understand that cancer is a medical issue, leading her to seek treatment at the University College Hospital (UCH) in Ibadan, where her case was managed by medical professionals.

Early detection played a crucial role in her survival; she presented at stage 1 of the disease, with no lymph node involvement. This early diagnosis, combined with her proactive approach to treatment, significantly improved her prognosis.

Determined to live for her young children, Anyanwu-Akeredolu made significant lifestyle changes. She eliminated starchy foods and sugars from her diet, avoiding items like soft drinks, eba, pounded yam, amala, akpu, and bread. Instead, she focused on consuming vegetables, smoothies, green tea, lemon and ginger tea, beans, moimoi, fish, chicken, snail, occasional rice, and zobo drink.

Reflecting on her journey, she emphasized the importance of mindset, stating that she did not believe her cancer was caused by anyone or was a spiritual attack, which led her to seek medical treatment rather than spiritual solutions.

Today, Betty Anyanwu-Akeredolu is a 27-year breast cancer survivor. Her experience underscores the importance of early detection, medical intervention, and lifestyle modifications in overcoming breast cancer.

In addition to her personal journey, she founded the Breast Cancer Association of Nigeria (BRECAN) to raise awareness and support for others facing the disease.
