On the morning of February 15, 2025, Omoyele Sowore, the African Action Congress's 2023 presidential candidate, was reportedly attacked by suspected thugs during the Lagos City Marathon. The assailants targeted Sowore, his media crew, and several journalists covering the event, resulting in injuries and damage to equipment. Videos from the scene depict physical assaults on Sowore and others, including a journalist being choked while holding a camera.

Sahara Reporters, a media outlet founded by Sowore, described the attackers as thugs affiliated with the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). The motive behind the attack remains unclear, and efforts to obtain a response from the Lagos Police Command have been unsuccessful, as the Public Relations Officer did not answer calls.

As of now, the condition of Sowore and the other victims has not been officially disclosed. Authorities have yet to issue a statement regarding the incident.
