1980 AFCON Hero Charles Bassey Dies at 71, Nigeria Mourns Another Legend

Charles Bassey, a member of Nigeria's 1980 Africa Cup of Nations-winning squad, has passed away at the age of 71 after a prolonged illness in his hometown of Eket, Akwa Ibom State.

Bassey was part of the historic 22-man Green Eagles team that secured Nigeria's first AFCON title with a 3-0 victory over Algeria at the National Stadium in Lagos on March 22, 1980.

Following his playing career, Bassey transitioned into coaching, managing several Nigerian clubs, including Calabar Rovers, Mobil Pegasus, BCC Lions of Gboko, Flash Flamingoes of Benin, Akwa United, and Wikki Tourists of Bauchi.

His death comes shortly after the passing of his former teammate and captain, Christian Chukwu, marking a significant loss for Nigerian football.

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) expressed deep sorrow over the loss, with General Secretary Dr. Mohammed Sanusi stating, "This has been a day of double tragedy, and the NFF and the entire Nigeria football fraternity are deeply saddened by the turn of events."

Bassey's passing brings to nine the number of players from the 1980 AFCON-winning squad who have died, including goalkeepers Best Ogedegbe and Moses Effiong; defenders Christian Chukwu, Okechukwu Isima, and Tunde Bamidele; midfielders Aloysius Atuegbu and Mudashiru Lawal; and forward Martins Eyo.

He is remembered for his contributions to Nigerian football both on and off the pitch.
