Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim has confirmed that goalkeeper André Onana will return to the starting lineup for the crucial Europa League quarter-final second leg against Lyon at Old Trafford. This decision comes after Onana was benched in the recent 4-1 Premier League defeat to Newcastle, following criticism for his performance in the first leg against Lyon, which ended in a 2-2 draw.
Amorim emphasized the importance of supporting players through challenging periods, stating that Onana's previous omission was intended to aid his mental recovery. He acknowledged the goalkeeper's past achievements, including reaching the Champions League final with Inter Milan, and expressed confidence in Onana's ability to perform at a high level.
The manager also addressed the team's broader performance issues, noting that every position, including the goalkeeping role, will be evaluated during the off-season as part of efforts to strengthen the squad.
In addition to Onana's return, Amorim announced that forward Joshua Zirkzee is ruled out for the remainder of the season due to a hamstring injury sustained in the match against Newcastle.
The upcoming match against Lyon is pivotal for Manchester United, as the Europa League represents their last opportunity for European qualification this season. Should they advance, they will face either Rangers or Athletic Bilbao in the semi-finals.
