The ongoing terrorism trial of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), has been reassigned to a new judge by the Chief Judge of the Federal High Court in Abuja, Justice John Tsoho. This decision follows Kanu's request in September 2024 for Justice Binta Nyako to recuse herself from the case, citing allegations of bias.
Kanu's legal team received official confirmation of the reassignment through letters from both the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, and the Chief Judge of the Federal High Court. Aloy Ejimakor, Kanu's special counsel, expressed gratitude for the prompt administrative intervention and reaffirmed Kanu's readiness to stand trial, maintaining his conviction of innocence.
Kanu has been in detention since June 2021, facing charges including terrorism, treason, and incitement of public violence.
The reassignment aims to ensure his constitutional rights to a fair and speedy hearing are upheld.
The identity of the new judge assigned to the case has not been publicly disclosed.
