Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang has labeled the recent violent attacks in the state as "pure genocide" and accused certain politicians of sponsoring these acts. In a January 2024 broadcast, Governor Mutfwang stated that the unprovoked and coordinated assaults resulted in the deaths of over 160 individuals during the Christmas period, describing them as acts of "criminality, insurgency, and terrorism."
He further alleged that some Plateau-based politicians have connections with the perpetrators, suggesting that these politicians have made inflammatory statements and may be linked to the insurgents. Mutfwang emphasized that these individuals are exploiting religious and ethnic sentiments for political gain, labeling them as "miscreants" lacking honor.
In response to the ongoing violence, former House of Representatives Speaker Yakubu Dogara has urged President Bola Tinubu to take decisive action against the perpetrators. Dogara warned that failure to act could embolden the aggressors, leading to further violence. He stressed the importance of identifying the financiers behind the attacks and addressing the root causes of the conflict to prevent Nigeria from descending into a state of lawlessness akin to Somalia.
Additionally, the North Central Governors' Forum has called on the Federal Government to thoroughly investigate the underlying causes of the persistent killings in Plateau State. They emphasized the need for a comprehensive inquiry to achieve lasting peace and prevent further bloodshed in the region.
