The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) has been actively working to enhance the movement of goods via rail across the nation. In the first half of 2024, the NRC generated over ₦1.14 billion in revenue from goods transported by rail, marking a 221% increase compared to the same period in 2023.
To further facilitate cargo movement, the NRC signed a memorandum of understanding with the Nigerian Shippers Council in August 2024. This agreement aims to streamline the transportation of goods from seaports to inland dry ports, thereby enhancing efficiency in the logistics network.
Despite these advancements, achieving 100% movement of goods through rail nationwide remains a significant challenge. The NRC continues to face obstacles such as infrastructure limitations, vandalism, and the need for increased public adoption of rail transport for cargo. Ongoing efforts are focused on addressing these issues to further improve the rail freight system.
