Alabi Quadri, the teenager who gained national attention in 2023 after standing in front of Peter Obi’s convoy during a Lagos rally, has been released from detention following a directive from President Bola Tinubu. Quadri had been in custody since January 2025 after being allegedly abducted by local youths upset over his viral fame and subsequent financial support. These individuals reportedly handed him over to the police, leading to his arraignment on charges of conspiracy to commit armed robbery, alongside four others. His lawyer, Inibehe Effiong, contested the charges, asserting that Quadri was being unfairly targeted by the criminal justice system .
The case sparked widespread public outcry, prompting President Tinubu to order the immediate release of all minors detained in connection with protests and related incidents. The President also mandated an investigation into the conduct of law enforcement officers involved in these arrests and called for the rehabilitation and welfare of the affected youths .
Quadri's release has been met with relief by his supporters and human rights advocates, who view it as a positive step toward addressing concerns about the treatment of minors within Nigeria's legal system.
