Nationwide 'Hands Off!' Protests Challenge Trump Administration

On April 5, 2025, a series of "Hands Off!" protests unfolded across the United States, with Washington, D.C., serving as a focal point. These demonstrations, organized by a coalition of over 150 groups—including civil rights organizations, labor unions, LGBTQ+ advocates, and veterans—united to voice opposition to President Donald Trump's administration. Participants expressed concerns over policies such as mass federal layoffs, agency closures, deportations, and cuts to social and health programs.

In Washington, D.C., tens of thousands gathered, protesting what they perceived as authoritarian actions and a billionaire-driven agenda. Criticism was also directed at Elon Musk, appointed to lead spending cuts through the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). Protesters condemned Musk's role in implementing policies that led to significant federal budget cuts, particularly affecting healthcare and scientific research.

Notable figures joined the dissent, including Senator Cory Booker, who addressed supporters in New Jersey, and former President Barack Obama, who urged Americans to defend democracy and resist Trump's agenda. Additionally, immigration activist Greisa Martinez Rosas made a powerful declaration at a rally in Washington, stating, “I am an immigrant, I am undocumented, unafraid, queer and unashamed,” highlighting concerns over immigration policies and their impact on marginalized communities.

The protests also responded to the administration’s sweeping 10% tariffs introduced on most global imports, which triggered a stock market crash erasing $6.6 trillion in value. Protesters carried signs, chanted slogans, and called for the protection of democracy and civil rights, signaling growing national discontent with the administration’s direction.

These events underscore a significant moment of civic engagement, reflecting deep divisions within the country and raising critical questions about the future direction of U.S. policies and governance.
