NBC Bans Eedris Abdulkareem's 'Tell Your Papa' Song

The National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) has banned Nigerian rapper Eedris Abdulkareem's latest song, "Tell Your Papa," from being aired on radio and television stations nationwide. The NBC cited the song's "objectionable nature" as the reason for its decision, stating that it violates Section 3.1.8 of the Nigeria Broadcasting Code, which prohibits content deemed inappropriate, offensive, or in breach of public decency.

In a memo dated April 9, 2025, and signed by the Coordinating Director of Broadcast Monitoring, Susan Obi, the NBC directed all broadcasting stations to refrain from airing the song to maintain responsible broadcasting standards.

"Tell Your Papa," released earlier this week, is a protest song in which Abdulkareem addresses Seyi Tinubu, the son of President Bola Tinubu, urging him to inform his father about the hardships Nigerians are facing. The song has gained significant attention on social media for its candid critique of the current administration.

Reacting to the ban, Abdulkareem condemned the NBC's action, describing it as an attempt to suppress free speech and silence dissent. He drew parallels to the 2004 ban of his song "Jaga Jaga" by the Olusegun Obasanjo administration, emphasizing that speaking the truth has often been met with resistance in Nigeria.
