Nigeria's National Assembly has approved a 2025 budget totaling ₦54.99 trillion (approximately $36.6 billion), surpassing President Bola Tinubu's initial proposal of ₦54.2 trillion. The increase includes an additional ₦719 billion allocated by lawmakers.
The budget encompasses a provision of $200 million to mitigate the impact of the United States' suspension of aid to Nigeria's health sector. Additionally, the government anticipates a deficit of 3.89% of the gross domestic product (GDP), equating to about ₦13 trillion.
Key allocations in the budget prioritize defense and security (₦4.91 trillion), infrastructure (₦4.06 trillion), health (₦2.48 trillion), and education (₦3.52 trillion). These allocations reflect the government's commitment to addressing critical sectors essential for the nation's growth and development.
The 2025 budget, titled "Budget of Restoration: Securing Peace, Rebuilding Prosperity," aims to consolidate policies designed to restructure the economy, enhance human capital development, and increase trade and investment. It also focuses on bolstering oil and gas production and revitalizing the manufacturing sector to improve Nigeria's economic competitiveness.
The National Assembly's approval of the budget underscores its role in shaping the country's fiscal policies, with the authority to adjust government spending plans as deemed necessary.
