PDP Slams Emergency Rule in Rivers, Labels It an Attack on Democracy

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has firmly rejected President Bola Tinubu's recent declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State, labeling it an unconstitutional attempt to undermine democracy.

In a statement by PDP National Publicity Secretary Debo Ologunagba, the party criticized the suspension of Governor Siminalayi Fubara and the appointment of Vice Admiral Ibokette Ibas (rtd) as the state's administrator. The PDP contends that these actions violate the 1999 Constitution and disregard the democratic choice of Rivers State's citizens.

The PDP also argues that the President lacks the constitutional authority to unilaterally impose emergency rule without the National Assembly's approval, as mandated by Section 305 of the Constitution. They caution that such measures could destabilize not only Rivers State but also the entire nation, suggesting that the move might be an attempt to impose a one-party state.
