The Federal Government of Nigeria has inaugurated the Agriculture and Water Resources Joint Action Committee, aiming to address food security challenges and reduce the country's reliance on food imports. This initiative seeks to promote all-year-round farming by leveraging Nigeria's abundant water resources and river basin development authorities. The committee's objectives include enhancing farmer livelihoods, increasing production, and encouraging youth and private sector participation in agriculture.

In addition to this, the government has introduced a 150-day duty-free import window for essential food commodities such as maize, wheat, rice, and cowpeas. This measure aims to stabilize food prices and ensure availability while supporting local production efforts. ​

These steps are part of a broader strategy under President Bola Tinubu's administration to achieve food self-sufficiency and economic resilience. The government emphasizes that while temporary import measures are in place to address immediate needs, the long-term focus remains on boosting domestic agricultural production.
