Recent Gas Explosion Incidents in Nigeria

The Nigerian House of Representatives is urging immediate action to address the frequent gas explosions causing significant loss of life and property. In 2024 alone, over 100 lives were lost due to such incidents.

Key Concerns:

  • Expired and Substandard Gas Cylinders: Many explosions are linked to the use of outdated or low-quality gas cylinders.

  • Lack of Public Awareness: There's insufficient knowledge about the dangers of using faulty gas equipment.

Proposed Actions:

  1. Enforce Standards: The Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON) should regulate and withdraw expired or substandard gas cylinders from circulation.

  2. Public Education: Launch nationwide campaigns to inform citizens about gas safety and the risks of using faulty equipment.

  3. Strict Safety Compliance: Ensure gas plants and retailers adhere to established safety protocols.

The House emphasizes the need for collaboration among government agencies, industry stakeholders, and the public to prevent future tragedies.
