A Bayelsa State High Court in Yenagoa has issued an order preventing associates of Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister Nyesom Wike from organizing a rally in the state. The rally was scheduled for April 12, 2025, in Yenagoa, the state capital. Justice I.A. Uzakah granted the ex-parte motion filed by the state's Attorney General, Biriyai Dambo, SAN, citing concerns over potential disturbances amid existing political tensions.
Governor Douye Diri explained that the decision to ban the rally was to prevent the political crisis in Rivers State from affecting Bayelsa. He emphasized that while the administration respects citizens' rights to assemble, holding the rally could be unwise and counterproductive given the current situation.
The court order restrains Mr. Wike, his agents, associates, and representatives from conducting or facilitating any political assembly in Bayelsa State related to celebrating or hosting him, pending further hearings. The case is adjourned to April 11, 2025, for hearing.
